At about 5.20 am, Ian was already half way on the road to DC. It was a chilly morning. The sun was at least an hour from rising, which put Ian at ease. These moments before dawn gave him the chance to immerse himself in that peculiar state of... synergy with his inner world. He was truly concerned about many things. Many things that weren't present in his day-to-day life, but inhabited his consciousness in the hours before 6 am. He was barely 21-years-old, yet he already felt like he was running late. Even though he completely fit in with the conventional standard for his age, he kept feeling like he had insufficient time to find his own place.
‘’You may have already noticed that there are cameras all around the perimeter. Believe it or not, it's important for us to know that you're safe and not killing each other.” I surrendered to the irony that bubbled in me with increasing pressure.’’

The culmination of the interaction brought them face to face with each other. Preston stood at one end of the table in a pose as domineering as he himself was. His fingertips clenched the edge of the table, and made his hands look like the tentacles of an octopus ready to seize everything around it.
- "That man is guilty!" he stated categorically. "And must be convicted!" he made sure to emphasize.
Jeff was in no rush to answer to what he was beginning to recognize as an ultimatum. He leaned against the desk and posed a question to himself: Why would the senator and his lawyer want to get involved in something that seemingly didn't concern them? He was getting the feeling that in the last few minutes he'd been forcefully dragged into a case with an ending that was clear to all but him. "What exactly are you telling me, Oliver?" he pressed the senator. "I don't remember agreeing to defend that man. And if I remember correctly, lawyers still have the right to choose who they defend. Am I right, Martin?" he turned to the other intruder.
Smith lowered his head, then stared out somewhere beyond the office's big window. He looked like he was mentally shuffling all the versions of what he could say. He was a lawyer, after all, he was supposed to pick his words more carefully than anyone.
"The rules... don't always apply, Mr. Dunne." started Smith. "Yes, you do have a choice, but not all laws are subject to the Constitution."
Apparently, the footage wasn't live, because Alice seemed to have already known about the incident. "What happened? Could you please turn it up?" he always followed similar tragedies with particular empathy. Right then, he saw five letters, which, among all the other letters and colors on the screen, stabbed him through the heart. He grabbed the remote and turned the volume up, his pulse racing almost as quickly as the cold chills that ran up and down his spine.
People would've preferred to remain in their comfort zone, to bitch and complain, but continue on the same trodden path. We needed a more gradual approach. More subtle.
And we found it. We changed direction in 2019, at the dawn of the COVID pandemic. The developing health, demographic, and economic crises forced leaders to speak. They were expected to provide daily updates and decisions on how to solve all the difficulties. The great powers needed to sit on the same table more often than they were used to. The words unification, reciprocity, unified policy, were spun like mantras in the media. A total charade, of course.
What did he gain? What did any of our investors gain?
The same as us - freedom.
People like Romanov paid dearly for it. And he happened to be paying someone in particular -
someone we wanted to get to. As soon as possible.
It was strange to inhabit reality while also knowing what we were doing and what was about to
happen in a few years. The world was going to take on a new way of progress. At first, we ourselves doubted that we would manage to open a path to a new system. We knew what we wanted to achieve, but the means and way to our goal could change at any moment.
“There’s a small change of plan,” started Fiona. Evidently, she was to have the honor of dropping the bomb. “Does the name Leyla Pierce mean anything to you?”
“I’m not sure,” I vaguely remembered hearing it, but that was all. “So what should the name mean to me?”
Fiona opened one of the folders on screen and picked one of about twenty files. Three pictures filled the screen. A beautiful woman, probably about my age. I didn’t know her. At this stage, I could establish nothing else.
“Leyla Pierce,” Fiona repeated. “An investigative journalist, one of the best in the country. Corruption and fraud at the highest levels of government are her specialty. Actually…”
The short pause added to the tension which was already starting to irritate me.
With 21 red dots scattered around the shore. Two of them, right next to each other, were blinking in tune with the alarm, while the others were static. Layla instinctively put the cursor on one of them and clicked.
“What the fuck!?” she yelled, almost panically.
We had taken care to have contingency plans for nearly every realistic or absurd scenario that could develop in the course of our mission. Besides, we were more than used to dealing with risky situations. In our struggle, barely a day passed without one.
Nonetheless, I was still worried. From inside the organization that we had all been inhabiting for years, it was sometimes possible to lose perspective of the monstrous magnitude of our operation. Interferences like this one that made us regain it were sobering - they reminded us of how enormous the elephant that we needed to hide was.
